Non-gov’t forum of African Commission on Human Rights discuses African migration - Egypt Today

CAIRO – 26 April 2019: With the participation of number of African representatives from Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and Congo; Sharm el Sheikh hosted on Friday a symposium on African migration as part of the non-governmental forum of the African Commission on Human Rights.

The symposium’s participants discussed the differences between being a “refugee and displaced” in the African conventions. The discussions also tackled the causes that led to the current African situation on this regard and the armed conflicts' role behind it.

The ‘refugees and displaced’ symposium was held on the sideline of the 64th edition of The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) which is held currently in Sharm el Sheikh City.

During his speech, Secretary General of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, Essam Shiha, discussed Egypt’s key rule hosting refugees from more than 50 countries. He shed light on Egypt’s Initiative Integrating refugees into Egyptian society and ensuring their economic and social rights.

Shiha noted that seeking asylum or being a displaced person, both are not modern terms and not affiliated only with the African countries.

Shiha added that Egypt was a leading country regarding supporting refugees. He explained that Egypt now hosts nearly more than 56 refugees of different nationalities.

On April 20, the non-governmental forum of the African Commission on Human Rights kicked off. The forum was announced to tackle number of discussions regarding immigration, displacement, women and children in need, as well as implementing the standards of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The forum is being held in partnership between the African commission, the African Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies, the National Council for Human Rights in Morocco and the Arab Organization for Human Rights.

The forum was inaugurated by Ambassador Yusuf Zadeh, representative of the Egyptian Foreign Minister; head of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), Hannah Forster is the Executive Director of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) and Alaa Shalaby, president of the Arab Organization for Human Rights.

Over 120 participants from 70 Egyptian, African and international organizations are participating in the forum.
