CAIRO - 27 February 2019: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed on Wednesday his condolence to the families of the victims who passed away in the exploded locomotive accident at the Cairo’s Ramsis Train Station and wished a quick recovery for all the injured.

“I issued immediate directives for the government to seek and punish whoever responsible for this catastrophe after thorough investigation and providing the necessary health care for the injured,” President Sisi stated ahead of attending a press conference with his Albanian counterpart in the Presidential Palace.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli affirmed that those who caused the collision of the train locomotive will be severely punished.

A train locomotive earlier derailed and crashed into a buffer stop on platform no. 6, causing the fuel tank of the locomotive to explode.

Madbouli said that those who fail to perform their duties and thus harm the lives of the Egyptian people will be punished. He added that a technical high-level committee was formed to investigate the incident.

Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Wali further affirmed that rescue and relief teams of the Egyptian Red Crescent and the Social Solidarity Directorate were sent to Cairo's Ramses train station to offer any help to families of victims, MENA reported.

At least 20 people were announced dead and 40 others injured.

Photographs on social media showed clouds of black smoke billowing from the building in central Cairo.

The fire engines immediately managed to control the fire, and ambulances arrived to transport the wounded to the nearest hospital.
