CAIRO – 9 February 2019: The Egyptian Parliament have requested a briefing into the evasion of some football players to pay taxes.

Parliament members have submitted a request to the Youth and Sports Committee at the parliament to look into the matter, which they deemed a waste of public money.

The committee issued recommendations to the Ministry of Finance to review the contracts of football players in Egypt and take the necessary procedures against violators.

Some Parliament members have also stressed that the government should not go easy on whoever commits tax evasion, pointing out that some clubs and players manipulate the figures in contracts to evade paying taxes.

PM Mohamed Fouad said in press remarks that a soccer player inked a contract worth of LE 40 million, however, when submitting his contract to the Egyptian Football Association, this figure was down to only LE 9 million.

Parliament members have been voicing concerns that the football business is currently pouring into the pockets of players only, stressing the necessity to activate certain mechanisms to detect and punish these violations.
