CAIRO, Dec 2 (MENA) - Al Azhar will form a committee for African affairs as Egypt will hold the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) next year.

The move has been decided by Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed el Tayyeb, said a statement issued by Al Azhar on Sunday.

The panel will be tasked with drawing up programs, plans and activities that boost peoples of the African continent, including more scholarships for African students and teachers dispatched to African countries, said the statement

These plans will go in parallel with Azhar missions that are meant to combat extremism fanned by radical groups and to spread moderate concepts of Islam, added the statement.

Other medical and relief teams will be also sent to the poorest countries.
