CAIRO – 29 October 2018: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched on Monday, Oct. 29 KhalifaSat satellite from Japan, carried by a Japanese rocket (H-2A), to become, according to officials, the first satellite to be made entirely by Emirati people.

KhalifaSat, a remote sensing and earth observation satellite, will provide satellite images of high quality, and will allow the UAE to provide competitive services in the world of satellite imagery.

According to Emirati media reports, the satellite will also help monitor environmental changes, aid disaster relief efforts, and contribute to urban planning.

"A new historic day for the UAE, KhalifaSat, the first Arab satellite 100 percent made by Emirati hands was launched," UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum said on Twitter.

It took 4 years to manufacture and prepare the satellite, and train a team from the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center. It is the first satellite to be made in the rooms of the Dubai's space facility.

"Our dreams of embracing space have become a reality by the hands of our young people, who are [setting] a new stage of scientific challenge," Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE's Armed Forces Mohammed bin Zayed said. The achievements made by the UAE people "demonstrate that Arabs can compete and lead," he added.

Farouk al-Baz, an Egyptian American space scientist, said that launching the satellite made by the UAE engineers gives hope to the youth and motivates production and planning.
