BANHA, Egypt - 21 October 2018: Around one million people have been checked so far in Qalyoubia as part of the national initiative for eradicating hepatitis C and chronic diseases, said Governor Alaa Abdel-Halim on Sunday.

Shubra and Banha have topped cities and townships of the governorate with the largest number of the tested citizens, Abdel-Halim said in a statement.

He estimated the total number of the checked persons at 938,609.

He called on people to get themselves checked as soon as possible to achieve the initiative's goal of getting Egypt free of hepatitis C.

Late diagnosis and treatment make the disease more fatal, he warned.

The initiative targets 2.9 million people in Qalyoubia, noted the governor.
