CAIRO – 28 May 2017: Egypt sent a letter to the UN Security Council Saturday, saying that retaliatory airstrikes against terrorist positions in eastern Libya following a deadly attack at a bus carrying Copts are "consistent" with UN Charter.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said in the letter that the airstrikes against the terrorist organizations in Derna, eastern Libya, are consistent with the Article 51 of the UN Charter on the legitimate right to self-defense, and with the UN Security Council’s resolutions on combating terrorism.

Egypt launched Friday airstrikes targeting terrorist camps in Derna hours after dozens of Coptic Christians were killed in a shooting attack by gunmen in Upper Egypt's Minya. At least 29 were announced dead, including children. The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
