CAIRO – 17 May 2017: Cairo handed the first volume of documents requested by the prosecution in Rome on the murder of Giulio Regeni to an Italian delegation visiting Egypt, according to a Wednesday joint statement.
Italy’s Assistant Attorney-General Sergio Cola Yoko arrived in Cairo Tuesday to meet with Egyptian Attorney-General Nabil Sadek and other Egyptian officials regarding Regeni’s case. The Italian prosecution had requested the documents on March 15.
The recordings of Cairo’s Dokki metro station surveillance cameras that Egypt had handed to the Italian prosecution will return home per an agreement to be concluded before the end of May, the statement said.
Regeni’s death has soured bilateral relations; the Italian ambassador has not returned to Cairo since April 2016. The body of the Ph.D. student was found with signs of torture on a highway in February 2016.
