CAIRO – 12 May 2017: Former diplomat Mostafa al-Feki has been appointed as the director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina after President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi approved his nomination by the library’s board of trustees.

Feki, 73, graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University in 1966 and acquired his PhD from the University of London in 1977. He was Egypt’s ambassador to Austria and worked at the country’s embassies in the U.K. and India.

He is also the head of the Diplomatic Studies Institute and a member of the National Council for Human Rights, the National Council for Women and the Supreme Council of Culture.

Feki has received a number of awards, including the Nile Award in social studies in 2010 and the State Appreciation Award in 2003.

He succeeds Ismail Serag el-Din, who had been the director since 2002. The new director will embark on a program of countering extremism and terrorism. He will oversee the organization of the Science City competition set to be held at 6 October City, and the “Memory of the Arab World” archive project.
