CAIRO - 5 May 2017: Ninety-nine historical garnished plates were seized by security forces on Thursday at Alexandria Port before being smuggled to Europe, Criminal Investigation Department said in a statement.

The criminal investigation bureau of the Alexandria Port received information about a cargo of modern furniture with archaeological artifacts hidden inside. The bureau was also tipped off that they were heading towards a European country.

Eventually police apprehended the suspect and successfully retrieved the stolen antiques (all ninety-nine plates recovered.) The apprehended suspect happens to be an agent at an exporting company owned by Wael M. The company is situated in Alexandria’s Attarin district. The suspect admitted to the theft of the items but claimed no knowledge of them being archeological artifacts.
