CAIRO – 21 March 2018: In his first interview ahead of election, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said there are no instructions that anyone who voices his opposition or grievances should be jailed.

In a short film that director Sandra Nashaat showed Sisi in the Tuesday interview, several people refused to talk, at least initially, to the camera about the problems they see with Sisi’s administration, fearing jail or persecution.

Sisi encouraged people to speak freely, warning that violence that harms the country will not be allowed.

Although he said TV presenters are free to talk for as long as they want about anything, however, he criticized talk shows where a presenter talks for hours every single day.

He said that for them to find material to talk about for such long hours means that, they present outstanding incidents that do not represent the society justly.

TV presenter Amr Adib during his talk show “Kol Yom” (Everyday) said that the media replaced the role of political parties, due to the absence of partisan life in Egypt

“Despite the existence of 102 political parties in Egypt, they are voiceless,” Adib added. “Only the voice of people lasts, and the president said that too.”

Adib said people got relieved after the president’s interview.

He added that the president was so open about the people’s feedback featured in the video that he even discussed the army’s budget.

“People asked the president and nothing happened, this is what we do and should be doing in the future, so that the press can witness expanded freedoms,” Adib said.

The interview ended with the camera fixed on Sisi saying he wanted the Egyptian people to know he only cares about “work, work, work.”
