Sisi inspects major projects in Port Said

CAIRO - 17 March 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi on Saturday inspected several major projects in eastern Port Said region.

The projects included a sea port, an industrial zone and fish farms, said Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi in press statements.

The inspection tour comes as part of tours made by the president nationwide to follow up implementing development projects, added the spokesman.

Port Said Governor Adel Al Ghadban said that several projects were achieved in his governorate.

Port Said became the first governorate in Egypt that is free from slum areas, he explained, adding that a logistical zone was set up in the Canal area.

The remarks were made during an inspection tour by president Sisi of development projects in the governorate.

The governor pointed out that up to 50,000 low-cost residential units were set up.

Also, the first complex for small-scale industries, including 58 factories, was set up, he added.

The governor further noted that three other factories for fish packaging, utensils manufacturing and power-saving lamps were established.

Another factory for producing car tyres and another for producing cooking oil will be set up by the end of this year at total cost of 4 billion pounds, he said, adding that the factories will provide around 5,000 jobs for young people.

Port Said Governor Adel Al Ghadban added that the City Hall has established a factory for garbage recycling.

The project is aimed are creating a clean environment in the governorate, he added.

Also two industrial waste recycling plants are under construction at an investment cost of 5.2 billion pounds, he pointed out.

He pointed out that up to 21 training programs were prepared for young people with a view to creating cadres that are capable to work in major projects that are carried in the eastern canal region.

Up to 7,000 young people were placed in jobs within the framework of the program, he added.

Head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish said East Port Said and Ain Sokhna harbors will help push forward the national economy and turn Egypt into a regional hub for world maritime trade.

Mamish said Port Said harbor is considered one of the most important Egyptian ports on the Mediterranean sea due to its geographical site as it is located on the Eastern entrance of the Suez canal.

He said East Port Said project includes East Port Said Port, three logistic areas, an industrial zone as well as the Technology Valley and the Industrial Zone project in Qantara in western Ismailia.

The Ain Sokhna project consists of Ain Sokhna port and the economic zone in the north west of the Gulf of Suez in addition to the ports of West Port Said, Arish, Adibiya and El Tor.

Mamish said the Suez Canal Economic Zone extends over 461 square kilometers across the three Suez Canal governorates of Suez, Port Said and Ismailia, and will include six maritime ports, to be completed by 2045.

Speaking about the Suez Canal Authority's efforts in East Port Said development project, he said the authority has been assigned to study the legal status of the lands allocated to "Mashreq" company to see whether they can be exploited in the activities of the economic zone.

The Suez Canal Authority was also assigned to start negotiations with Dubai Ports Authority to resolve the problem of the Sonker bunkering company and settle disagreements as regards the operation of Ain Sokhna port, he added.

Sonker is set to build and operate a bulk-liquids terminal for the import and storage of oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the third basin of Ain Sokhna Port on the Red Sea.

Mamish said total investments of East Port Said project are estimated at 1.8 billion dollars. The project provides 8,000 direct and 20,000-25,000 indirect jobs.

The dredging operations of the project were carried out by Suez Canal Authority dredges over three stages with a total cost of 325 million dollars.

He added that dredging works in East Port Said is 81.3 percent complete and they will be totally finalized by September of 2019.
