CAIRO - 28 April 2017: An Egyptian-Palestinian summit is due to be held on Saturday, Egypt’s state-owned MENA reported Palestinian ambassador to Cairo Amr El Shobaky on Thursday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will arrive in Cairo on Saturday to discuss with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fatah al-Sisi the ways of reviving the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis.

On March 20, both leaders talked about the Egyptian and Arab efforts that lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, along the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Saturday summit comes ahead of Abbas’s visit to Washington D.C. where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House due in May.
During his six-day visit to Washington D.C. earlier this month, he talked with President Trump about the Palestinian-Israeli case.

Trump backed away from a decades-long policy of supporting a two-state solution in the Middle East; he said in a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he is open to either a two-state or a one-state solution.

For more than a decade, the U.S. brokered the peace process between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, backing the two-state solution. However, in April 2014, the peace process halted when Abbas announced a unity government including Fatah and Hamas representatives.
