Construction of 4th line of Egypt’s Metro to start by 2018

Cairo- 22 April 2017: The National Authority for Tunnels will study offers by Japanese companies to implement the fourth line of Cairo’s vital metro service next July, so that construction begins by the beginning of 2018, head of the authority’s Central Department of planning, Tariq Abul-Wafa told Extra News channel on Saturday.

The long awaited fourth line of metro will serve the new touristic attraction, the Grand Egyptian Museum in Haram, which is set to open for visitors in two years. It will also serve thousands of Egyptians who will be able to use 17 underground stations stretched on 19 km, from 6th of October is a city, on the outskirts of Cairo, to Haram in Giza.

Japan plans to provide Egypt with a $1.2 billion loan to fund the project, with an interest rate of 0.2 percent over 10 years.

Cairo’s underground system is one of the oldest in the Middle East and Africa and it serves around three million passengers daily.
