Five trash bins stolen in a Cairo neighborhood

CAIRO – 24 January 2018: Five large trash bins have been stolen from different streets in El Basatin neighborhood, increasing the number to 30 in a year and half, Chairman of Basatin Municipal Authority Adel Abdel Zaher said on Tuesday.

The official stated that the authority had filed a complaint at the police department accusing scrap traders of being behind the theft as the bins are made of steel. He also urged citizens to report any theft attempt of trash bins.
Abdel Zaher added that the authority exerted great efforts to get those five bins from Maadi Neighborhood Municipal Authority after the introduction of the new waste collection system by the latter.
"The cabinet has allocated LE 300 million ($17 million) for the new waste collection system to purchase necessary gear and pay the wages of the additional labor," Cairo Governor Atef Abdel Hamid said on October 5, 2017.

The new system will have workers collect garbage door to door, and will remove all trash bins from the streets to prevent garbage collectors from sorting waste in the streets, which was the old system of dealing with waste.

The new system was put into effect in September in Maadi, following the completion of contracts with foreign companies, ending the phenomenon of waste accumulation in the area’s streets.

The governor affirmed that the new system will be implemented all over Cairo gradually after the completion of current contracts with foreign companies in each neighborhood, announcing that the next area where the new system will be introduced is Tora.
Trash bins of all sizes have been subject to theft and vandalism in Egypt for years.
