CAIRO - 17 January 2018: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stressed on Wednesday that Al Quds will remain an eternal capital of Palestinians, saying there is a major plot targeting Al Quds in defiance of all international conventions.

Addressing a conference in support of Al Quds, Abbas said there is a colonial plot being knitted against Al Quds that was clearly represented in the latest announcement of US President Donald Trump in which he claimed that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

The two-day conference is organized by Al Azhar to raise awareness about the status of Al Quds, emphasize its Arab and Islamic identity and highlight the international community's responsibility towards the holy city.

Trump announcement was a flagrant violation of international law and a clear defiance of feelings of millions of Muslims and Christians, the Palestinian president said.

The US is challenging the international consensus as regards the status of Al Quds, he said, citing the 2012 recognition of the UN General Assembly of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Also in 2017, the UNGA unanimously voted against Trump decision and considered it null and void, he also said.

Since 1947 and to date, the UNGA passed 750 resolutions in favor of Palestine but none of them came into force because of the international community's passivity and inaction, he said.

By this decision, the US administration became an untrustworthy peace sponsor and a distrusted broker in the Middle East peace process, he added.
