CAIRO – 16 April 2017: The State Council’s legislation section sent its final report to the Parliament in which it rejected the new judicial authority draft law.
The council said that the draft law could be unconstitutional, especially in light of its preparation without the consultation of judges, as stipulated in the constitution.
In March 2017, The House of Representatives approved a draft law on the judiciary and sent it to the State Council.
The law allows the executive authority to appoint the heads of main courts and judicial institutions. The draft was largely rejected by judges and some members of parliament.
Meanwhile, the media committee of the Judges Club of Egypt said in a statement that it rejects the law and considers it as a major violation of Egypt's judicial system.
