CAIRO – 11 April 2017: The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, reiterated his objection to calling Islamic State group members "non-Muslims or infidels,” Al-Masry Al-Youm reported Tuesday.

In press remarks following his meeting with local newspaper heads Tuesday, Tayeb said Al-Azhar cannot expel people who believe in the principle of Tawhid (onnes of God) and follow Qibla (Kaaba direction that should be faced during prayers).

“Al-Azhar won't back off from its stand whatsoever,” Tayeb said, stressing that Al-Azhar maintains its moderation and strongly repudiates extremist approaches.

Tayeb said this statement following two major church bombings during celebrations of Palm Sunday, , by which IS claimed responsibility for, causing a countrywide public outrage.

A blast at Mar Girgis Church in Tanta left at least 44 dead and over 70 injured. Another attack four hours later at Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria happened resulting in 16 fatalities and at least 40 injuries.
