LONDON - 26 December 2017: Addressing thousands in St Peter’s Square during his Christmas Day address, Pope Francis has firmly restated his opposition to the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, The Times reported on Monday.

In speech that will put further distance between himself and the politics of US president Donald Trump, the pope said “a negotiated solution can finally be reached” on Jerusalem, “one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two States within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders.”

After President Trump announced his plans for Jerusalem earlier this month, Francis claimed the status quo of Jerusalem had to be respected, adding he was “profoundly concerned” about the scheme and calling Jerusalem a sacred place for Jews, Muslims and Christians.
