CAIRO – 9 December 2017: Palestine’s President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that he rejects the U.S. administration’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Palestine and Jerusalem’s Arabic identity is too ancient to be changed by this decision,” Abbas said in a recorded message during a press conference on Saturday in the Palestinian embassy in Cairo. He added that Jerusalem and its people will stand firmly against any trials to assassinate its identity or to falsify its authentic Arab history.

Abbas asserts that Trump’s decision will not change Jerusalem’s long history, “Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine forever, we believe in our national rights, and we will stand one united front to defend Jerusalem, peace and freedom. And we will work to end this occupation.”

Palestine’s president mentioned that he handled several urgent meetings with the Palestinian Liberation Organization to follow up on Jerusalem’s updates in the region. He also assigned a permanent committee to consider all the options to defend Jerusalem.

Finally, he saluted all those who scarified their lives for Palestine.
Earlier on Saturday, Mahmoud Abbas, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, and Pope Tawadros of Alexandria II, will refuse to meet with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence later this month, over Washington’s policy towards Jerusalem.

The Arab League’s spokesman Mahmoud Afify said on Saturday that the Arab League (AL) called on the U.S. administration to reverse its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“The Arab League points out that members of the international community acknowledge Palestine’s status as an occupied state,” said AL’s spokesman.

On Wednesday, Jordan and Palestine requested an emergency meeting between Arab foreign ministers to discuss future actions in response to the United State’s decision to declare occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Earlier, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned the American administration's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the relocation of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
