CAIRO – 8 December 2017: Al-Azhar condemned United States President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel; describing it as an “illegitimate and reckless step” and an unacceptable attempt to falsify history.

In a press statement issued early Friday, Al-Azhar’s Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb warned against the dangerous consequences of the U.S’ decision which inflamed the sentiments of all Muslims and posed a serious threat to international laws and the world’s security.

Such a decision shows the U.S.’ double-standard policy in favor of Zionist occupation, which has committed blatant violations against the indigenous people and robbed their heritage, al-Tayeb stated.

"We call upon the leaders and governments of the Islamic world, the Arab league, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the United Nations to act swiftly and seriously in rejecting the decision to transfer the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem,” he stressed.

Al-Azhar’s press statement concluded with a message of unwavering solidarity to the people of Jerusalem; saluting their steadfastness and long-simmering commitment to their cause.
