CAIRO – 8 November 2017: Egypt Today briefs top political news of the past 12 hours and issues related to accident, starting with the strike in Catalonia over the detainment of political activists which also led for roads to be closed off.

Strike in Catalonia causes closure of roads
A strike called by activists to protest the imprisonment of isolated politicians of Catalonia closed off roads across the Spanish province on Wednesday morning, according to AFP.
One crowd of activists also forced their way into the train station in the city of Girona and protested on the tracks, causing delays, images on social media showed.

However, despite transport delays, shops and businesses in the region largely appeared to be functioning as normal.
The independence drive has tipped Spain in to its worst political crisis in decades, widening political and cultural divisions and prompting thousands of companies to relocate out of the region.
The government, which assumed control of Catalonia after a unilateral independence declaration, has called an election for December 21.

New York mayor Blasio elected for second term
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was elected on Tuesday for a second four-year term, according to U.S. media.
De Blasio has made several achievements in his first term, most notably his success in implementing his biggest electoral promises: to enable children over three years of age to enter public schools where children are not allowed to attend public schools until the age of five.

The mayor has positioned himself as one of the most vocal critics of Republican President Donald Trump, who has received strong disapproval ratings from voters in his native city.

Trump arrives in China as part of Asian tour
U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in China as part of his Asia tour to establish a global front against the nuclear weapon ambitions of the "cruel dictatorship" in North Korea, CNBC reported.

The three-day trip is Trump's first visit to the country since he took office in January. He is the first head of state to visit China since the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Blast in Turkish factory kills 5, wounds 16
Five people were killed and 14 injured in an explosion at a paint factory in northwestern Turkey, media said. The blast was caused by a kettle in the factory, officials said on Wednesday.

Nine workers and several customers were in the factory when the explosion took place, said the Mayor of Gorsu city, NTV quoted.

Nieto said that 184,000 homes were totally damaged, while 14,000 businesses and 16,000 schools were also affected.
On September 1985, Mexico City suffered another quake with a Richter’s magnitude of 7.1, leaving 369 people killed.
