CAIRO - 28 October 2017: The Giza Criminal Court handed down a death sentence to a convict charged with inciting violence in a case dubbed by the media as the “Kerdasa Incidents Trial” on Saturday.

As per the court ruling, the death sentence will be sent to the grand mufti to take his advisory opinion. The court has set November 29 to hand its final ruling concerning the convict and 10 other defendants, who were tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution the defendants face charges of gathering, using force, inciting violence against the police, possessing unauthorized arms and ammunition in the city of Kerdasa, Giza, in December 2014.

Kerdasa is a blue-collar district that is believed to be a stronghold for the Muslim Brotherhood members in Giza. Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members were sentenced to death over violence-related crimes in the wake of the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi; however, the court of cassation has revoked most of the initial verdicts and ordered re-trails.
