CAIRO – 24 October 2017: The United Nations remains the main guarantor of international peace and stability, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid.

In a statement on the occasion of the United Nations Day on Tuesday, the spokesman said that Egypt will continue to shoulder its responsibilities for defending the interests of Arab and African countries and developing countries through its current membership of the UN Security Council, the Group of 77 (G-77) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Egypt backs the reform of the UN Security Council in a way that takes into account the rights of developing countries and ensures that it has a voice present in the decision-making process of the UN, the spokesman said.

On this occasion, the Foreign Ministry's building will be illuminated today to express the Egyptian diplomacy's appreciation of the UN bodies, the spokesman added.

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.

In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.
