CAIRO – 16 October 2017: Ismail Haniya, Hamas chief, discussed on Monday with Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, the Arab League secretary general, the importance of moving ahead to implement the national assigned reconciliation.

This came through a phone call between Haniya and Aboul-Gheit, where they talked about the agreement made in Egypt and the challenges facing the implementation of the reconciliation.

During the call, Haniya confirmed the need to overcome all potential challenges that may arise to achieve the Palestinian national unity and put an end to the 10-year division between the Palestinian factions.

For his part, the Arab League secretary general praised the reconciliation and the Egypt’s mediation for its success, stressing that we all support the Palestinian issue and that reconciliation is a great step to achieve unity.

Palestinians have one big goal, which is establishment of a Palestinian state and obtaining national independence, indicating what they must do to achieve that, added Aboul-Gheit.

Aboul-Gheit pointed out that the Arab League supports reconciliation and hails to host Haniya in its headquarter to discuss many Palestinian issues.

Earlier, Abbas extended the Palestinian people’s appreciation of President Sisi for his administration’s efforts in signing the reconciliation agreement in Cairo, according to the Palestine News Agency (WAFA).

“What was agreed upon strengthens and accelerates the steps to end the division and restore the unity of the Palestinian people, land and institutions,” said Abbas.

The two main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, signed an Egypt-brokered reconciliation deal in Cairo, in a key step towards ending a decade-long rift between the two movements.

The deal will see administrative control of the Gaza Strip handed to a Fatah-backed unity government.
