CAIRO – 7 October 2017: Egypt and Saudi Arabia have played a vital role in unifying the Syrian opposition factions, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Lavrov added during a joint press conference Saturday with his Kazakh counterpart Kairat Abdrakhmanov that his country welcomes both states’ approach, pointing out that expanding the number of states monitoring Astana negotiations will represent an enormous benefit.

“Saudi Arabia is providing a serious assistance to unify the Syrian opposition factions, including those in Riyadh, Moscow and Cairo, paralleled by similar efforts from the Egyptian part that managed to ease the tension in four troubled areas in Syria”, said Lavrov, adding that Moscow welcomes such useful initiatives.
