Abul Gheit discusses achieving development with UN officials

NEW YORK – 23 September 2017: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit held on Saturday meetings with Mohamed Ali Alhakim, the UN Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) as well as Achim Steiner, the UN Development Program (UNDP) administrator.

The meetings were held on the fringe of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

AL Spokesman Mohamoud Afify said that the meetings fall within the framework of Abul Gheit's keenness on enhancing development and improving economic and social conditions in the Arab countries.

During the meetings, the AL chief expressed appreciation for the role of ESCWA and UNDP in providing Arab countries with needed support in the fields of funding and technical assistance, Afify noted.

As well, he voiced hope for maintaining such support in the coming phase within the framework of building new joint programs and projects and expanding cooperation in holding training sessions, conferences and meetings to tackle issues of Arab priorities to contribute to promoting experiences of Arab cadres in various fields to be able to achieve the goals of 2030 agenda.

Afify added that both UN officials reiterated ESCWA and UNDP commitment towards supporting Arab countries especially those which suffered in the past few years from armed conflicts and disturbances.
