CAIRO - 30 August 2017: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call on Wednesday from his Japanese counterpart Tarō Kōno on fostering cooperation between the two countries, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid in a statement.

The Japanese Foreign Minister expressed keenness on working with the Egyptian Foreign Minister to strengthen bilateral relations, in the light of the recent successful visit of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Japan.

He noted that he is looking forward to visiting Egypt soon, where he will participate in the Arab-Japanese dialogue to be held at the Arab League on September 11, during which he will meet with Minister Shoukry “to coordinate with Egypt a number of regional and international issues of common interest.”

Kōno expressed gratitude for Egypt’s role in the Security Council and its supportive stance that North Korea must respect the relevant United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions on North Korea's missile launch across the Japanese territory.

The U.N. Security Council, headed by Egypt, held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the escalations in the Korean peninsula.

On Tuesday, North Korea fired a missile over Japan. The missile landed in the water close to the northern region of Hokkaido. This step by North Korea is one of the most provocative actions and came in conjunction with U.S.’ and South Korea’s forces annual military exercises.

Last year, in February, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi visited Tokyo where he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and delivered a speech f at the Japanese parliament.
