CAIRO – 26 August 2017: The authorities of Alexandria governorate have started to prepare for the next winter season to prevent any possible problems resulting from heavy rain. All safety measures have been examined during a meeting of the Emergencies and Crisis Committee headed by governor Mohamed Soltan on Friday.

The governor ordered a follow-up on the readiness of municipal authorities, and any concerned institutions for the winter season in terms of mechanisms and equipment. He also set a timetable of inspection visits for these institutions.

Soltan assigned the heads of neighborhood authorities to designate the areas that are most affected by rainstorms to take the necessary precautionary measures, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The governor stressed the importance of adopting a mechanism to clean ditches and rain sewers and to remove dust so they would not get blocked, in addition to quickly draining standing rainwater.

Soltan also instructed officials to check if there are any exposed wires protruding out of lighting poles and to immediately respond to any complaints regarding rainwater accumulation through an ad hoc operations room.

In winter 2015, a crisis occurred in Alexandria. Rainwater flooded the roadways due to the lack of maintenance to the street drainage system.
