CAIRO – 12 March 2025: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has emphasized the need to intensify preparations to ensure that the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in July reflects the status and history of the nation without placing any financial burdens on the state budget.
This is particularly important as GEM is one of the largest cultural and civilizational landmarks in the world, Sisi stated during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Tourism Sherif Fathy, Managing Director of United Media Services (UMS) Tarek Makhlouf, and UMS board member Mohamed El Saadi on Wednesday.
Egypt is gearing up to officially open the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, which will host over 100,000 artifacts. The grand opening will feature a multi-day ceremony.
The British magazine The Telegraph published its annual list titled “Travel’s 50 Biggest Winners and Losers in 2024.” Topping the list of winners was the Grand Egyptian Museum.

During today’s meeting, the president checked on the preparations for the ceremony and reviewed the planned activities, the Presidency said in a statement.
Egypt aims to maximize the event's potential as part of broader efforts to enhance the tourism sector and highlight the contributions of Egyptian civilization and its pivotal role in shaping global cultural heritage.
These efforts also seek to increase the number of tourists visiting Egypt, leveraging the country’s natural and cultural assets.
The meeting addressed the promotional plan for the opening celebration and the ongoing coordination with the private sector to implement marketing campaigns in hotels and tourist resorts.
This collaboration aims to showcase the museum as an ideal opportunity to experience the essence of ancient Egyptian history combined with the latest exhibition technologies.
Sisi stressed the importance of leveraging the momentum of the museum's opening celebration to promote tourism destinations across Egypt.
GRAND OPENING FOR GRAND GEM
The prime minister announced last month that the opening ceremony will take place on July 3 as per the president’s approval.
The grand opening will see leaders and officials from around the world in attendance. In February, Sisi invited Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to participate in the opening ceremony.
Strategically located on the Giza Plateau, adjacent to the iconic Great Pyramids and the Sphinx International Airport, GEM is dedicated to preserving Egypt's unique heritage.
The museum is among the largest and most modern museums globally, covering an expansive 500,000 square meters and housing an extensive collection of artifacts, including the priceless complete collection of Tutankhamun.
Many of these rare and unique archaeological finds have never been publicly displayed before, making GEM a significant addition to the global cultural landscape.
With its ambitious goal of enriching the understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization and history, the museum is expected to attract millions of tourists annually.
This influx of visitors is anticipated to significantly contribute to Egypt's economy, bolstering the tourism sector and promoting cultural exchange.
In addition to its impressive collection, GEM plans to implement innovative initiatives, including the development of interactive exhibitions that merge technology with historical insights.
GEM hosted a soft opening in November 2023, welcoming visitors to explore its beautiful gardens and cafes, the impressive hanging obelisk, and the main galleries.
