CAIRO – 31 January 2025: Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon has expressed serious concerns regarding Egypt's military expansion, The Jerusalem Post reported on Friday.

In remarks to the press, Danon questioned the necessity of Cairo's substantial investments in advanced weaponry, particularly given the lack of immediate threats to the country, in his view.

He highlighted the potential implications of Egypt's military buildup, especially in the context of the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, claiming that such developments are a cause for concern.

“Why do they need all these submarines and tanks?,” the Israeli envoy said. “After October 7, alarm bells should be raised. We have learned our lesson. We must monitor Egypt closely and prepare for every scenario.”

Danon highlighted the US role in supplying the Egyptian Armed Forces, stating that Israel needs to ask the US why Egypt requires such arsenal.

Egypt and Israel are committed to peace under their 1979 peace treaty.

While the Israeli war in Gaza has been halted by a ceasefire brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States under former President Joe Biden’s administration, Cairo has been resisting a US-Israeli plan to displace Palestinians in Gaza to Jordan and Egypt.

These relocation plans, led by US President Donald Trump, have triggered massive protests in Egypt’s Rafah, rejecting the displacement of Palestinians, in line with the stance of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Sisi emphasized this week that a displacement of the Palestinian people from Gaza would be “injustice that Egypt cannot be part of.”

In a press conference with Kenyan President William Ruto in Egypt on Wednesday, Sisi highlighted Egypt’s warning since the start of the Israeli war in Gaza of any attempts to make life in the Gaza Strip unbearable, ultimately leading to the displacement of the Palestinian people.
