CAIRO - 5 June 2023: About 65 percent of the first phase of Haya Karima initiative went to Upper Egypt, an area that had been neglected for decades. Some 63% of the total number of villages in the first phase, about 1,477 villages, are located in Upper Egypt.

Beneficiaries amount to 10.3 million Upper Egyptians out of 18 million in the first phase.

Thus far, 8,100 projects in Upper Egypt have been approved at a cost of L.E. 180 billion out of 270 billion pounds allotted to the first phase.

A study by the Egyptian Center for Strategic Studies revealed that only a few dozen families lived in New Sohag by 2014 after some 14 years of a decree to establish it.

It lacked a lot of services, but Haya Karima gave it a great deal of attention to turn it into a prosperous city in a short time.

The total investments in Sohag governorate amounted to L.E. 102 billion from mid-2014 to December 2022 in 6 areas of development, including industrial complexes, transportation and communications, educational services, health services, housing and utilities, and social protection.
