Egyptian Prime Minister, UK Foreign Secretary meet on sidelines of King Charles III coronation

CAIRO – 7 May 2023: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli met Saturday UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs James Cleverly on the sidelines of his attendance of the coronation of King Charles III on behalf of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.

 

Secretary Cleverly said that Egypt is a significant partner to the UK and an important international player, stressing that both countries should work on expanding bilateral relations to higher levels in the coming years.

 

The meeting equally tackled the armed conflict in Sudan so as the two sides asserted the salience of reinforcing international efforts to achieve a quick solution that would end the battles, and ensure the security and safety of the Sudanese people.  

 

On that front, the prime minister presented the measures Egypt took to accommodate displaced Sudanese citizens. In a similar context, Secretary Cleverly thanked Egypt for assisting with the evacuation of UK expats from Sudan. He also commended his excellent relationship with Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shokry and consultations on the Sudanese crisis.

 

With regard to development endeavors in Egypt, Prime Minister Madbouli displayed what is being implemented in the field of establishing a modern public transportation network. That includes introducing a monorail, whose cars are supplied by UK's Alstom, LRT, and new metro lines.  

 

On another level, Secretary Cleverly praised the outstanding organization of COP 27 by Egypt, and the effort invested by the Egyptian presidency of the summit in accomplishing concessions among stakeholders.

 

The Egyptian prime minister and the UK secretary of state for foreign affairs concluded by discussing the economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine War on world countries, precisely in the sectors of energy and food.
