FGM rate in Egypt decreased to 14% among age group between 0 -14 yrs old: NCW president Maya Morsy

CAIRO – 20 March 2023: Egypt’s president of the National Council for Women [NCW] Maya Morsy,  Said on Monday that Egypt has made tangible progress in 2030 Women's Strategy during the past period.

During her speech at the Egyptian women celebration attended by president Abdel Fattah al Sisi and his spouse, Morsy noted that during the year 2022, the number of beneficiaries from the NCW reached 12 million in all of the country’s governorates.

She also added that NCW works with the national project for the development of the Egyptian family on developing exhibitions, workshops and business incubators, along with promoting women's opportunities in the different projects.

 

President of NCW announced during her speech that the rate of Female genital mutilation in Egypt decreased from 21% to 14% among the age group of 0 -14 years old.

“However, we still looking forward to a labor law that supports women and to increase penalties against violence towards women, we also look forward to a ‘personal status law’ that supports women and children's rights” Morsy said.

She highlighted Egypt’s winning presidency to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination.

‘I extend my sincere thanks to the government, ministers, privet sectors for their cooperation in the file of women's empowerment. I also thank all of the National Council for Women members and President Abdel Fattah al Sisi and his spouse for all exerted efforts to protect women and empower them’, NCW president, Maya Morsy said.

During the celebration ceremony President Sisi and his spouse Intisar al Sisi stood for a photo-op with a number of role models of Egyptian women.

This came during the 2023 ceremony to honor Egyptian women and ideal mothers, held at the Manara International Conferences Center in New Cairo.

Sisi granted certificates of appreciation and Order of the Virtue to ideal mothers and some respectable ladies.

The ceremony is also attended by Senate Speaker Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Planning and Economic Development Minister Hala el Said, Social Solidarity Minister Nevine el Kabbaj, Head of the National Council for Women Maya Morsi and a number of senior state officials
