CAIRO – 24 September 2022: Egypt’s Presidency of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) is keen to coordinate with the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) to achieve the desired results regarding climate change loss and damage issue.

Shoukry’s remarks were made in a meeting with the AOSIS on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York within the framework of communications with all parties and blocs concerned with global climate action, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

During the meeting, Shoukry, also president-designate of COP27, affirmed the Egyptian COP27 presidency’s keenness to address the climate change loss and damage issue to which the island states attach great importance.

He also affirmed Egypt’s awareness of the growing losses and damages that affect these countries as a result of climate change and the waves of hard weather, including storms, hurricanes, floods and droughts.

On the sidelines of the UNGA session, Shoukry held numerous meetings with his counterparts from all over the world as well as a number of high-level officials and country leaders over the past days.

Shoukry’s discussions with the officials were largely focused on the repercussions of the Ukraine crisis, the need to relaunch peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis, and enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields with other countries.

As COP27 president-designate, Shoukry also reviewed Egypt’s vision regarding climate change and ambitions to advance climate action during the conference, which Egypt is scheduled to hold in Sharm El-Sheikh city between 6 and 18 November.
