COP27 tops Egypt’s priorities, and we welcome all Int'l support that contributes to summit’s successes: FM Shoukry

CAIRO – 18July 2022: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said, Monday that UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) comes on the top of Egypt’s priorities.

He added during participating in the Petersburg Climate Dialogue that Egypt welcomes all international support that contributes to the successes of COP27.

“We hope to make climate change on the top of the world’s agenda along with aiding the developing countries to confront the consequences of climate change phenomenon.” Shoukry said.

He added: “I have heard a lot of supportive and encouraging efforts ad statements regarding facing climate change and felt a lot of political support regarding this issue that will be raised between President Sisi and the German president during their meeting today in Berlin, and we hope to reach an agreement during COP27 that will be held in Sharm el Sheikh by the of the year to solve the climate change crises.”

Shoukry called on all participates at Petersburg Climate Dialogue “to take advantage of all opportunities to discuss climate changes in preparation for the upcoming climate summit in Egypt.”

“We must strive to close the gaps associated with climate change” Shoukry said.

Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister said that It is necessary to have a “common will to deal with the initial results and agreements that are expected to be reached in Sharm El-Sheikh.”

“With regard to financing climate change, it is important to ensure the full contribution of countries” Shoukry said. He also noted that all parties [governmental and non-governmental] should be involved while addressing the climate change issue.

The 13th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD13) was launched in Berlin on Monday under the co-chairmanship of Egypt and Germany.

Egypt was invited to this important event in view of its pivotal role under the leadership on President Abdel Fattah El Sisi vis-a-vis climate change negotiations over the past few years.

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry - who is also President-designate of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP 27) - and his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock opened the event.

Ministers and senior negotiators from representative countries gather in Berlin for the 13th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD13) that follows the Bonn SBs and G7 Summit in June.
