Sisi heads to Abu Dhabi to offer condolence over death of UAE president

CAIRO - 14 May 2022: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Saturday morning heads to Abu Dhabi to offer condolences over the death of the UAE president, said Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi.


Sisi on Friday mourned the death of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa died Friday at the age of 73.

Sisi, in a tweet, called him a great leader who worked hard to turn the UAE into a model of development and modernization.

"Sheikh Khalifa truly loved Egypt and was a loyal friend through all circumstances," Sisi said.

The Egyptian president condoled with the UAE and its people for the death of Sheikh Khalifa.

The UAE Federal Supreme Council Saturday unanimously elected Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President of the United Arab Emirates, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

The Council held a meeting today at Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah; Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman; Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah; Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu'alla, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain; and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs said that according to Article 51 of the Constitution, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected as the President of the UAE to succeed the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
