CAIRO – 13 May 2022: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry affirmed on Friday the need for the quick implementation of the climate related pledges during the ministerial meeting on climate in Denmark’s capital of Copenhagen.

The meeting was chaired by Shoukry as the president-designate of the UN Climate Conference (COP27). The meeting tackled the implementation of climate pledges, which includes reducing emissions causing climate change.

Shoukry mentioned the steps of reviewing and enhancing nationally determined contributions regarding reducing emissions, which were agreed upon at the last session of the conference in Glasgow (COP26).

Shoukry discussed on Thursday with his Danish counterpart, Jeppe Kofod, cooperation between the two countries regarding boosting Danish investments in Egypt and COP27, which Egypt will host in November.

Shoukry and Kofod also signed on Thursday an MoU on high-level political consultation between the foreign ministries of both countries.

The MoU is concerned with high-level political consultation on the bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual concern, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

As they held a session of consultations as part of Shoukry’s official visit to Copenhagen to attend a ministerial meeting on climate pledges, Shoukry and Kofod discussed issues of bilateral relations and ways to enhance those ties.

The delegations of the two countries attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Shoukry stressed his aspiration to enhance bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Denmark and to continue exchanging visits at various levels.

The Egyptian minister also welcomed the signing of the MoU, saying it would raise the level of cooperation and coordination between Egypt and Denmark.

The consultations addressed the files of bilateral relations and ways to develop them.

Shoukry, in this regard, praised the existing Danish projects in Egypt. He stressed the importance of pumping more Danish investments in the country in light of the opportunities offered by the ongoing comprehensive development process in Egypt, including in the field of green transformation.

The ministers also discussed means of cooperation between Egypt and Denmark in light of Egypt's hosting and presidency of COP27.

Shoukry, president-designate of COP27, co-chaired on Thursday with President of COP26 Alok Sharma a ministerial meeting on climate pledges hosted by Copenhagen.

In his speech, Shoukry said that the meeting was a chance to exchange views and experience on the aspects of international climate work.

The minister underlined the importance of implementing the provisions of Paris Climate Agreement, and fulfilling climate pledges on reducing emissions and others announced in Glasgow's COP26.

The COP27 president-designate stipulated that the fulfillment of climate pledges is a priority for the Egyptian chairmanship of the conference, to be held in Sharm El Sheikh next November.

He added that Egypt aspires that the conference would contribute to the assessment of the current status of implementing climate pledges and to formulating mechanisms that would make the goals in Paris Climate Agreement materialize.
