Minster of Immigration contacts Egyptian citizen injured in Brooklyn subway shooting

CAIRO – 13 April 2022:  State Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Nabila Makram contacted Egyptian citizen Karim Atef, who got injured in the shooting that took place Tuesday morning aboard a subway train in Brooklyn.

During the phone call, Makram checked on the health condition of Atef, who suffered leg injury and will have another operation after 10 days, according to a statement issued by the imigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Ministry on Wednesday.

The minister, who wished speedy recovery for Atef, also contacted Atef's family to assure them on his health condition, added the statement.

A man set off smoke grenades and fired a handgun on a crowded New York City subway train, wounding passengers and setting off a panicked scramble during the Tuesday morning rush hour.

The Foreign Ministry said two Egyptians were among the victims of Brooklyn subway shooting that took place earlier in the day.

One of the injured Egyptian is in a critical condition and has undergone a foot surgery, the ministry said in a statement.

As part of the State's efforts to follow up conditions of nationals abroad, Egypt's consul in New York Howaida Essam Abdel Rahman rushed to the hospital in Brooklyn where Karim Ali has undergone a surgery to inquire after his health.

The ministry stressed that the consul will follow up Ali's case round the clock until his full recovery.

The consul also contacted another Egyptian that was injured in the stampede that followed the shooting incident and was assured that she is okay.

At least 16 people were injured in the Brooklyn subway shooting, with five people reported to be in a critical condition.

The shooter set off smoke grenades in a crowded subway car and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9mm handgun, police said.

The shooter fled in the ensuing chaos, leaving behind the gun, extended magazines, a hatchet, detonated and undetonated smoke grenades, a black garbage can, a rolling cart, gasoline and the key to a U-Haul van
