CAIRO – 25 February 2022: Egypt appointed its veteran economist Mahmoud Mohieldin as its Climate Champion in preparation for the upcoming UN climate change conference set to be hosted by Egypt this year.

Mohieldin is also the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This comes in preparation for the upcoming 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27), which is scheduled to be held in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh city this November, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read.

“The appointment comes in the context of Egypt’s efforts, as incoming COP Presidency, to enhance its engagement with actors from the private sector, businesses, international organizations and financial institutions,” the statement said.

“Mohieldin is set to embark on his duties as Egypt’s Climate Champion with immediate effect, in accordance with the “Marrakesh Partnership for Global Climate Action” previously adopted by the Parties to the UNFCCC,” the statement added.

Mohieldin will collaborate and coordinate with UK’s Climate Champion Nigel Topping and the UNFCCC with the aim of connecting the work of governments on addressing climate change to the many collaborative actions taken by businesses, investors, international organizations and private institutions,

Mohieldin’s duties also includes mobilizing stronger and more ambitious climate action towards addressing climate change and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

“Mohieldin’s efforts will contribute to the efforts undertaken by Egypt as incoming COP President,” the statement added.

Mohieldin previously held various prominent international positions, including the World Bank Group Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, as well as being a former Egyptian Minister of Investment.
