CAIRO – 21 February 2022: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi received Monday U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in Al Itihadiyah presidential palace, and the meeting was attended by Miniser of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry, Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad, and U.S. Ambassador Jonathan Cohen.

The president welcomed the convention of the first meeting of the U.S.-Egypt Climate Working Group, which is one of the outcomes of the latest strategic dialogue between both countries held in November 2021.

The president added that he looks forward to continuous consultation with the United States over climate change matters in the coming period, especially that Egypt prepares to host COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022.

In that regard, the president affirmed that Egypt would adopt a comprehensive and objective approach during its chairmanship of the summit, and that it would take into consideration the priorities and stances of all parties. That is to ensure that the summit comes up with positive results that would be in the interest of international climate work, particularly reducing emissions, coexisting with the negative impact of climate change, and mobilizing funds to developing countries.

On his side, Kerry expressed the United State's confidence in Egypt's chairmanship of COP 27, and its keenness on bolstering joint cooperation between both countries to push forward international climate efforts.

The American envoy pointed out that the international community senses the seriousness of President Sisi about international climate work, and green transformation.

As a result, that was manifested in the president's participation in the High-Level Segment for Heads of State and Government at Glasgow's COP 26, One Ocean Summit, and his chairing of the roundtable discussion on climate change during the 6th European Union – African Union Summit in Brussels.

Both parties conferred over expanding the participation of American firms in Egypt's plans to turn into an energy hub in the region, including the production of green hydrogen, solar power, and wind energy as well as the introduction of low-carbon transportation and electric transportation.

The work of investors in Egypt has been made easier through legislative amendments, and launching creative funding mechanisms for green projects, such as the green bonds Egypt has issued recently.
