CAIRO – 17 January 2022: The allocation for security, firefighting, and traffic control in the FY2021/2022 budget is worth LE1.27 billion ($79.4 million). The breakdown among governorates, from the highest to the lowest, is:

Alexandria (LE185 million); Cairo (LE125.9 million); New Valley (LE112.5 million); Asyut (LE111.8 million); Giza (LE68.3 million);  Kafr El Sheikh (LE63.6 million); Sharqia (LE62.4 million); Beni Suef (LE53.9 million); Gharbia (LE51.6 million); Luxor (LE50 million); Menya (LE45 million); Qalyoubiyah (LE36.5 million); Daqahliyah (LE32.4 million); South Sinai (LE30.5 million); Aswan (LE30.5 million); Fayoum (LE30.1 million); Matrouh (LE27 million); Ismailiyah (LE25.4 million); Beheira (LE25.1 million); Red Sea (LE25 million); Suez (LE24.1 million); Damietta (LE19.5 million); Menoufeya (LE16.6 million); North Sinai (LE13 million); and, Port Said (LE8 million).

Although Cairo is the most populous governorate, the amount allocated to it is lower than that dedicated to Alexandria by LE59.1 million. Yet, Alexandria is the main travel destination for Egyptians in summer.

Similarly, although not populous at all, the New Valley comes third among the governorates with the highest security budgets, given it is a border governorate, stretching over hundreds of kilometers.

On the other hand, North Sinai, where terror attacks were frequent a few years ago, comes in second among the governorates with the lowest allocations.
