CAIRO – 10 July 2017: Deputy of the Human Rights Committee in parliament, Mohamed El Gul, suggested evacuating thousands of Arish and Sheikh Zowayed dwellers in North Sinai temporarily until security is restored and terrorism is terminated, with a guarantee by the government of their return following a certain timeline.

As El Shorouk newspaper reported on Monday, the MP said they would be displaced into urbanized areas and given compensation for any possible damage to their properties.

The suggestion is on the basis that terrorists often hide in areas inhabited by civilians, which makes chasing and arresting them before launching terror attacks difficult for security forces, who are keen to preserve civilians’ safety.

“Our martyrs from both the army and the police are a real treasure built over long years, costing the state millions, and any blood drop of any of them is priceless,” stated El Gul.
The MP stipulated that the recurrent terror attacks in North Sinai are draining the state’s budget.

“Our condition now is worse than war, and we are fighting more than one country. Our enemy is not identified yet. The latest terror attack (on the Barth security ambush) proves that it is not individual work, but an intelligence operation supported by foreign countries like Turkey, Qatar, and Israel,” El Gul said.

On the other hand, MP of Sinai Rahmy Abd Rabo denied the suggestion and described it as a “media show.”

Deputy of Defense and National Security Committee Yehya El Kedwany said that when evacuation of specific areas to face terrorism is necessary, all measures are possible under the state of emergency, especially to restore full control over the towns of Arish and Sheikh Zowayed.

Commenting on the rejection of North Sinai citizens to the expected evacuation, El Kedwany stated that, prior to the displacement, the area will be divided into precise locations to be evacuated, in accordance with a well studied system. That is because many terrorists take shelter in residential areas.

In March, 139 Christian families were displaced from Arish to Ismailiya governorate, located on the eastern shore of the Suez Canal, due to continuous terror attacks against them.
