CAIRO - 1 September 2020: The 108th session of the Economic and Social Council kicked off on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League.


The meeting aims at setting the stage for the council's meeting on Thursday at the ministerial level.

The meeting, chaired by Libya, is attended by Assistant Secretary General, Head of Social Affairs Sector Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh and AL Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Department Ambassador Kamal Hassan Ali.

A number of important issues are tabled on the meeting's agenda, topped by a report by the AL secretary general on the council's socio-economic activities during the period between the 107th and 108th sessions.

The meeting is set to discuss items related to the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, the Arab Customs Union and the establishment of an Arab ministerial council to be in charge of the affairs of local authorities.

Participants will also discuss backing the Palestinian economy and the 2020 report on Arab food security.
