CAIRO- 22 July 2021: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Thursday ratified a decree to extend the state of emergency throughout the country for another three months. The decision will be effective on Saturday, the 24th of July.
On July 12, 2021, Egypt’s House of Representatives approved in a plenary session the presidential decision no. 290 of 2021, regarding the extension of the state of emergency throughout the country for another three months.
House Speaker Hanafi El-Gebaly said "the majority required for approval was available, which is two-thirds of the parliament's members.”
The state of emergency, which has been in effect since 2017, has been extended on the grounds of fighting terrorism, protecting national security and implementing development programs in a stable climate.
The text of the president’s decision stated that the decision was taken in light of the dangerous security and health conditions that the country is going through, and that after taking the opinion of the Cabinet.
The second article of the decision stipulated that the armed forces and the police take the necessary measures to confront terrorism and its financing, protect public and private properties, and preserve the lives of citizens, and delegate the prime minister to the powers of the President of the Republic stipulated in the emergency law.
