CAIRO – 20 June 2021: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday affirmed Egypt’s unwavering support to Libya in its current political path as he received Libya’s Foreign Minister Najla El-Mangoush in Cairo.

Sisi affirmed full support to the interim Libyan Presidency Council and the executive government, affirming that the Libyan national security is an extension for that of Egypt.

“We are always keen that this [political] path is completed and ends with elections that express the will of the Libyan people, away from the present militias and mercenaries,” Sisi said.

Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s unchangeable stance on preserving the unity of the Libyan territories, the sovereignty and will of the free Libyan people in choosing their leaders and non-interference in Libya’s affairs.

Sisi hailed the “heroic positions” of Mangoush, affirming that Egypt would continue to support Libya until the elections are held this year “without anybody’s interference or the presence of militias that impact the will of people in Libya”.

He conveyed his greetings to the Libyan people and leadership.

Mangoush, for her part, conveyed the “sincere” greetings of the head of the Libyan Presidency Council and the prime minister to Sisi.

Mangoush said the Libyan Presidency Council and the prime minister express their “pride of the Egyptian pioneer role in supporting peace in Libya and consolidating the dialogue principles”.

She also lauded Egypt’s announcement of the Cairo Declaration in June last year, saying it represented a “historic stance”.

Mangoush hailed Sisi’s vision that the stability in Egypt and in Libya is inseparable, saying that Libya “relies on national security and joint security cooperation”.

She expressed hope that “Egypt plays an effective role in unifying the military institution and bringing the Libyans together in terms of the national reconciliation and the preparedness for elections.”

“We always need Egypt and need the Egyptian leadership to create balance in the region,” Mangoush said, asking for boosting the diplomatic representation between the two countries.

“Away from any diplomatic compliments, Egypt and Libya are connected via a very long historical relationship, neighborhood, and common culture,” Mangoush said, affirming the need for strengthening this cooperation.

Mangoush also met on Saturday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, where they agreed on intensifying consultation and coordination to enhance ties.

Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s support to the temporary executive authority in Libya in its mission during the transitional phase, the integrity of Libyan territories, the resolutions of the Libyan Dialogue Forum, Security Council resolution 2570, holding elections on Dec. 24, and removing all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya without delay or procrastination.

The two diplomats discussed preparations for the ministerial conference of Berlin 2 on Libya on June 23 and coming up with results that support the principles mentioned, guaranteeing a bright future for the Libyan people, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Shoukry said Berlin 2 meeting is an opportunity for the international community to commit to welfare and sovereignty of Libyans.

For her part, Mangoush welcomed the reopening of the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli and the Egyptian consulate in Benghazi, praising the Egyptian role in the success of the Libyan Dialogue Forum and supporting legitimate Libyan institutions.

Last week, chief of the Egyptian intelligence service Abbas Kamel visited Tripoli to meet with Prime Minister Abdel Hamid al-Dabaiba.

There, Kamel emphasized Egypt’s unwavering efforts until elections are held in Libya, paving the way for national unity and establishing a modern, civil, democratic state.
