Egypt’s FM Shoukry meets Palestinian President Abbas in Ramallah

CAIRO – 24 May 2021: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met, Monday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah city in the West Bank, as he affirmed Cairo's continuing efforts to solidify ceasefire.

Shoukry discussed with Abbas ways to revive the peace process and to provide all necessary support and assistance to Palestinian people.

Palestinian President Abbas praised an initiative announced by President Abdel Fattah al Sisi to rebuild the Gaza Strip following the recent Israeli onslaught.

During meeting with Shoukry in Ramallah, Abbas extended thanks to the Egyptian leadership for its efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the coastal enclave in a way that reflects the distinguished position of Egypt at the Arab, regional and international levels.

Shoukry said that his visit came upon directives of President Sisi to provide all possible support for the Palestinian people and consolidate the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip to achieve sustainable and comprehensive development, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez said.

 

Shoukry called on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides to engage in talks to achieve the two-state solution and restore enduring peace and stability.

 

Shoukry also stressed the importance of stopping all forms of escalations, which hinder efforts to bring about peace, especially in East Jerusalem

Earlier today, Shoukry arrived in Ramallah, coming from Amman, Jordan, to show Egypt's support to the Palestinians.

In a press conference with Jordanian counterpart Ayman al Safadi, Monday, Shoukry affirmed the need to reach a solution for the Palestinian issue in order to ban any possible future conflicts or aggressions.

Shoukry said that the two-state solution must be activated in Palestine in order to meet the people’s demands and achieve peace.

He noted that the recent confrontation between Hamas and Israel caused humanitarian disaster.

Shoukry also pointed out that he has discussed ways to preserve the rights of the Palestinian people with the Jordanian authorities, as he conveyed a message from President Abdel Fattah al Sisi to King Abdullah II of Jordan, expressing the depth of relations between the two countries.

The Egyption Minster also stressed that the reconstruction of Gaza should be prioritized, as Egypt announced an initiative of $500M for the reconstruction operations that will take place in coordination with the Palestinian Authority to contribute to improving the living situation for the people in Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
