CAIRO – 26 April 2021: Prominent politician and leader of the Popular Resistance in Suez governorate Sheikh Hafez Salama died on Monday at the age of 92.

It was reported that Sheikh Salama was admitted to a hospital in the Suez governorate on April 13 after being infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19). But he was recently transferred from Suez to the El Demerdash Hospital in Abbasseya district, Cairo, after his health condition deteriorated.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Grand Mosque in Al-Salam City in Suez, and then he will be buried in the new Suez cemetery, his family announced.

Sheikh Salama was born on December 6, 1925. He was the leader of the Popular Resistance during the 1973 October War in the Suez Governorate. During the war, he was helping and meeting with the fedayeen (Egyptian civilians who volunteered to resist the Israeli occupation forces).

He was distributing the tasks among the fedayeen, according to press interviews during the past years, until the popular resistance was able to prevent the Israeli enemy from occupying the Suez Governorate.  He also had a prominent role in charitable work.
