CAIRO – 15 April 2021: Egypt's Envoy to the United Nations Mohamed Edris, who also chairs the UN Peacebuilding Commission, presented to the UN Security Council work pertinent to the African Great Lakes.

The commission has been coordinating closely with the governments of countries surrounding the African Great Lakes to reinforce cooperation in different fields, including security, mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and Ebola, women empowerment and bolstering their role in peace mediation in the field.

Those countries are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Further, the commission has been mobilizing funding support through international financing institutions, and developing programs for disarmament, reintegration of militants programs, and remedying causes of conflicts.

The commission also displayed its vision on its future steps under the chairmanship of Egypt. Those steps are about coordination with the abovementioned countries, International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the African Union (AU).

Such efforts are aimed at backing the new UN regional strategy on the region, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
