CAIRO – 9 April 2021: The Egyptian Health Ministry said 789 new coronavirus cases were detected on Thursday, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak of the virus in the country to 208,082.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 33 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 12,323.

As many as 439 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 157,889 so far, the spokesman said.

As the country is witnessing a third coronavirus wave, authorities expect the number of cases to surge during April, which coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Health Minister Hala Zayed in a press statement on Thursday urged citizens to adhere to the preventive measures against coronavirus during Ramadan, through maintaining social distancing and wearing face masks.

She urged citizens to avoid home visits and to hold gatherings at open air as much as possible.

Egypt has started its vaccination campaign in January, starting with the medical teams at quarantine hospitals, for being on top of priority groups in terms of vaccination.
